Vera Mindy Chokalingam, professionally known as Mindy Kaling, is an American actress, comedian, screenwriter, and author born on June 24, 1979, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States, to Avupaiappan and Swati Chokalingam.
Mindy Kaling’s parents, Avupaiappan and Swati, met in Nigeria while working at the same hospital. Her father, an architect, was supervising construction work at the hospital building while Kaling’s mother worked as an obstetrician/gynecologist.
Kaling is a shortened version of Chokalingam, and although her first name is Vera, Mindy has stated that nobody has ever called her by that name, not even while her mother was pregnant with her.
It is believed she shortened her ethnic Indian name to make it easier to pronounce for English speakers. A scene played out by Mindy in the TV series The Office reinforces this premise.
