The Iggy Azalea Biography
Iggy Azalea was born Amethyst Amelia Kelly on June 7th, 1990, in Sydney, Australia. Her parents are Brendan and Tanya Kelly, and she also has two siblings, Emerald and Mathias Kelly.
Brendan and Tanya Kelly are regular, yet maybe eccentric people – Brendan being a comic-book artist and Tanya working as a cleaner for holiday stays and hotels around the area. Brendan built their family home on 12 acres out of mud bricks and often shared his love of art with his children. Iggy was influenced intensely by her upbringing, and she always felt different from other children.
Iggy’s family heritage dates back into the 1900s and earlier in Australia. She believes that she has Australian aboriginal blood because she and her family share a rare eye condition that only Aboriginal peoples have.
She first discovered rap and hip-hop from an earlier age – around 14. She started a musical group with her friends and wanted to be like the group TLC – where of course, she would be the group’s rapper. They quickly dismantled when the other two girls realized that Iggy was serious about the group(for the others, it was more like a past-time).
And thus begins Iggy’s fantastic journey to fame and fortune – making her dreams a reality.
How The Journey Started
Iggy Azalea’s journey first starts with her dropping out of high school. Besides art class, where she could fully express herself, she thought the rest of high school was a complete waste of time. So at 16, she decided to drop out for good.
At 16, Iggy joined her mother working cleaning hotels and get-aways. She made okay money working with her mom and secretly saved every dollar that she could. She was determined to go to the birthplace of hip hop – The United States.
Once she saved up enough money at 16, she lied to her parents and told them she was traveling on vacation to The United States and would be back. Little did they know, Iggy had planned to stay in the United States. She called her parents and told them she was staying in the United States after landing. Her parents were upset but supportive of their daughter’s decision. Iggy never felt at home in Austalia – she desired to be in the place where hip-hop all began. Once she landed, she felt right at home.
Iggy spent the first several years in the United States between Miami, Florida, and Houston, Texas, before eventually ending up in Atlanta, Georgia. She met and collaborated with local artists, such as FKi and Natalie Sims. Her career didn’t obtain much traction until she collaborated with Interscope in 2010, after which she moved to Los Angeles and adopted her rap name – Iggy Azalea – a mash-up of her first dog’s name and the street she lived on in Austalia.
She released her first full-length mixtape on September 27th, 2011, called Ignorant Art, containing her first biggest hits like “Pussy” and “My World.” A few months later, she would release her debut album “The New Classic” in December.
Iggy wanted to work with top Hip Hop artist T.I. and asked him to collaborate and help produce her work. Unfortunately, Interscope didn’t agree to T.I. to be working on the album, so Iggy made the hard decision to end her collaboration with Interscope. T.I. thankfully had his own record label, Grande Hustle Records, which Iggy signed within March 2012.
In 2012 she released her second mixtape, “TrapGold.” Also, she released her music video for “Murda Bizness” which is one of her most popular songs to date. Later that year, she went on a small North American tour with Rita Ora before crossing the ocean to head a European tour for her mixtape.
In February 2013, she debuted her new single “Work” on BBC radio. Also, she announced that she signed with a new record label: Mercury Records. At this time, she also went on another Europen Tour with rapper Nas.
The rest of 2013 was a big year for Iggy Azalea and drove her even more to stardom. She released her most famous songs, including “Bounce” and “Change Your Life.” She was also announced as Vevo’s second LIFT artist, performing at multiple festivals and fashion shows. Later in the year, she opened for none other than the queen herself – Beyonce on the Mrs. Carter Show world tour.
In February 2014, Iggy released the song “Fancy,” featuring English singer-songwriter Charli XCX, making it to the Billboard Top 100 list. Iggy had a couple of setbacks with “The New Classic” release because of the tour she went on with Beyonce. Still, it was finally officially released in April 2014.
In 2015, Iggy had plans to have another world tour, but unfortunately, it got pushed back to 2016. During 2015, she collaborated with Brittney Spears on their song “Pretty Girls” and continued working on their new album. In 2016, she started her own production company called Azalea Street Productions.
Unfortunately, during 2016 she had a breakup with her ex-fiance Nick Young, which pushed back her album release and her tour. However, she did sign on to be a judge on the popular show “The X Factor.”
In 2017, the rapper signed to another new label, and unfortunately, this pushed her album release back again to 2018. In the meantime, she released a few songs to free on platforms like WeTransfer, and she also released an EP called “4 My Ratz.”
It came to light that the record label she has signed with was Island Records, and due to management struggles was the reasoning behind the late album release. She eventually terminated her relationship with them and started her own record label, first called New Classic Records, later changing the name to Bad Dreams in January 2019.
In 2020 she announced that she would be releasing a new album called “The End of an Era” and that she would also be the opening act for Pitbull in 2021 during his I Feel Good tour. Iggy also announced that once her new album was out, she would be taking a much-needed break from producing and making her music.
Plastic Surgery
The Internet is awash with questions regarding Iggy Azalea and whether or not she has had plastic surgery. She has never tried to hide or shame away from admitting she has had surgery done.
She openly discussed that she underwent breast enhancement surgery during an interview with Vogue.
In a separate interview with Seventeen magazine, she spoke about having surgery performed on her nose.
Her butt, however, is what the Internet gossips about most. To that end, Iggy has stated, is the result of hard work and a good diet rather than surgery.
Achievements And Awards
Iggy Azalea has been nominated and has won many music awards. She was the first non-American rapper on XXL’s “Top 10 Freshman List.”
In 2014 she won an MTV music video award for her collaboration with Ariana Grande, won two awards from the American Music Awards, and had many other nominations with both organizations. She was the most nominated artist at these two music awards shows for that year.
Iggy also won one MTV Europe Music Award and three Teen Choice Awards that year. In 2015, she won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Hip-Hop Artist.
