The Escape Story
In 2002 at the age of 16 years, Latifa made her first attempt to escape from Dubai. However, she was caught by Dubai’s officials and was sentenced to three years imprisonment in her villa.
Again in February 2018, she embarked on a daring plan to cross the border and set herself free along with her friend Tiina Jauhiainen. Before they escaped princess Latifa shot a video in which she claimed that although Dubai is a place of glitz and glam life of an Emirati woman is very restrictive, I am not allowed to drive, make my own choices and leave Dubai at all. They choose to escape via roads as Latifa’s passport was under the surveillance of UAE officials.
They managed to cross the borders and reach the coast of Oman. Then they took a jet ski and reached international waters where their Yacht Nostromo was waiting which were supposed to carry them to their freedom. But eight days later when they are about to reach the Indian coast there escape went horribly wrong and all of them were captured by navy officials and handed over to Emirati commandos. She then had flown back to Dubai where she was house-jailed in a villa.
Her friend Tiina was also taken back to UAE and detained there for 2 weeks. For about 9-10 months she heard nothing from the princess and thus she decided to form a campaign group in the name of ‘Free Latifa’ to bring her case in light of international media. UN started exerting pressure on UAE to give them proof of life for the princess otherwise they will consider her dead and deal with the case accordingly. In December 2018 UAE released photographs of the princess to show the outside world that everything is well with her.

In August 2021 the campaign was declared as ended successfully after the release of few photographs in which the princess was spotted in public with her cousins including Marcus Essabari in Iceland, Spain, and Dubai.
