How The Journey Started
Krystsina was a fun-loving girl since her childhood. She had an inborn athletic talent. Her parents wanted her to focus on her studies. At the age of 15 years, her hidden talent was identified by an Olympic-level athletic coach. He approached her for training initially Krystsina’s parents were against her decision to choose athletics as her career. But later on, they were convinced by Tsimanouskaya and her grandmother. The Tokyo Olympics Turmoil – Attempted Government Kidnapping
Performing in the Olympics is a dream for every athlete, and so was it for Krystsina. But her dream turned into a nightmare after she posted an Instagram video criticizing the National Sports Authority of Belarus for forcing her to participate in a 400m relay race, in addition to her planned event. She said that she had no experience and training in 400m relay events, and her name was given without her consent.
After the video went viral, the Belarusian sports authority asked her to leave the games. Belarusian officials forcibly took her to Haneda Airport to board a flight back to Belarus. But she refused to board the flight and asked Tokyo police for protection. She was unwilling to go back to Belarus because she was afraid of being threatened by the National Olympic Committee of Belarus for speaking against the negligence of their coaches.
On 3 July 2021, she spoke to a journalist and said she is afraid to go back to her homeland Belarus. She intended to claim asylum in any other county; she got a VISA from the Poland government on Humanitarian grounds. On 4 August 2021, she flew to Warsaw Chopin airport, Poland.
In an interview, she stated that she is now safe and ready to begin a new life in Poland with her husband. After securing her safety in Poland, she dropped a bombshell by announcing that a Belarusian Olympic team doctor had encouraged her to commit suicide. “To pressure me and scare me, saying that I had mental problems, that I suffered from a manic state and that people in my situation usually think about taking their own lives” Krystsina recalled.
